Jive

The Jive originated with African-Americans in the United States in the early 1930s. The dance was born out of Jitterbug, another form of Swing dancing that was especially popular with the young. The Jive is a fast, happy, and boppy dance with lifted knees and rocking of the hips. It is danced in 4/4 time to Swing music.

Cab Calloway, band leader and entertainer, contributed to the popularity of Jive. American soldiers brought the dance to Europe in the 1940s. In America the dance was known as Swing, but the name Jive was adopted in the UK from variations like Boogie Woogie, and Swing Boogie. The dance was eventually included among the International Style dances for competition in 1968.

Today Jive is danced competitively.
