The term “Carolina Shag” is thought to have originated in Cherry Grove Beach, South Carolina in the 1940s. The Carolina Shag was influenced by Carolina Jitterbug and the Little Apple (closely related to the Big Apple). The musical roots of Carolina Shag are from the 1920s and 1930s where is evolved out of jazz and swing music.
Some of the first “stars” of the dance include Billy Jeffers, “Chicken” Hicks, and “Big” George Linberry. There were many dance clubs along the coast of North and South Carolina. Teenagers from all over the Carolinas were drawn to it’s daring image and excitement and the dance soon became a social phenomenon.
